Common refrigerator problems
Not cooling or too warm. Condenser coils clogged with dust, a failed condenser or evaporator fan, a defrost system fault, a bad start relay, or a sealed-system problem.
Freezer frosting up. A failed defrost heater, thermostat or control, or a door gasket that no longer seals.
Leaking water. A blocked defrost drain, cracked drain pan, or leaking ice maker supply line or water inlet valve.

Common questions
Why is my fridge not cooling but the freezer is cold?
In many fridges, cold air from the freezer is blown into the fresh-food section. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, the usual causes are a failed evaporator fan, frost blocking the evaporator coil due to a defrost system fault, or a stuck air damper. These are repairable parts, not usually a sign the fridge is finished.
Why is there water under my refrigerator?
Common causes are a blocked defrost drain that overflows inside and drips out, a cracked drain pan, or a leaking water supply line or valve for the ice maker and dispenser. A leaking supply line should be shut off quickly to prevent floor damage.
How long should a refrigerator last?
Many refrigerators last around 10 to 15 years. Models with built-in ice makers and dispensers tend to need more repairs over their life. A refrigerator with a failed compressor late in its life is often better replaced.
What should I do with food if my fridge stops working?
Keep the doors closed as much as possible; a full freezer holds temperature longer than a fridge. Move perishables to a cooler with ice if the repair will not happen within a few hours, and discard food that has been above safe temperatures for too long.
