What is a perimeter drain and why does it fail?
A perimeter drain is perforated pipe laid around a home's foundation footing to carry groundwater away from the basement or crawlspace. Over time it can clog with silt and roots, collapse, or lose its connection to the storm system, which lets water build up against the foundation.
Can perimeter drains be cleaned instead of replaced?
Often, yes. If a camera inspection shows the pipe is intact but full of silt or roots, perimeter drains can be flushed and cleaned through cleanouts. Broken, crushed or badly clogged sections usually need excavation and replacement.
