Waywest Mechanical installs and services water treatment systems in Nanaimo and across Vancouver Island, including water softeners, sediment and carbon filtration, UV disinfection and iron and manganese filters. These systems address hard water, well water bacteria, odours, staining and sediment. Waywest recommends treatment based on a water test and installs systems with bypass valves for easy servicing.

City water or well water — very different problems
Municipal water in Nanaimo and most Island towns is treated and tested by the utility. Homeowners on city water usually look at treatment for taste, chlorine smell or point-of-use drinking water filtration rather than safety.
Private wells, common in Cedar, Yellow Point, Lantzville, Nanoose, Qualicum and rural areas across the Island, are the owner's responsibility. Well water can carry bacteria, hardness, iron, manganese, sulphur odours or sediment, and it can change seasonally.
That is why treatment should start with a water test, not a product.
What each system does
Water softeners remove the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Hard water leaves scale in kettles, water heaters and tankless units, spots on glass and fixtures, and shortens appliance life.
Sediment filters catch sand, silt and rust particles before they reach fixtures and other treatment equipment.
Carbon filters reduce chlorine taste and smell, and some organic compounds.
UV disinfection uses ultraviolet light to inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms in water as it flows past. UV needs clear water to work, so it is usually installed after sediment filtration.
Iron and manganese filters remove the dissolved metals that cause orange or black staining in sinks, toilets and laundry.
Reverse osmosis provides highly filtered drinking water at a single tap, typically the kitchen sink.
How we approach water treatment
- Test first. Use a lab test for wells, or review your municipality's water quality report for city water.
- Match treatment to results. Only install what the water actually needs, in the right order.
- Size for your household. Flow rate and usage matter, especially for softeners and UV systems.
- Install for serviceability. Bypass valves, isolation valves and space to change filters and lamps.
- Explain maintenance. You leave knowing what needs changing and when.
Signs your water may need treatment
- White scale on fixtures, kettles and shower glass
- Orange, brown or black staining in sinks and toilets
- A rotten-egg smell from hot or cold water
- Cloudy or gritty water
- Soap that does not lather well
- Short water heater life
- A well that has not been tested recently
Protecting your other equipment
Untreated hard or sediment-heavy water is hard on water heaters, tankless units, dishwashers and washing machines. On a well with hard water, a softener can extend the life of that equipment considerably.

Common questions
Is Nanaimo tap water hard?
Nanaimo's municipal water supply is generally considered soft, so most homes on city water do not need a softener. Homes on private wells elsewhere on the Island can have very different water, including hardness, iron or manganese, which is why Waywest recommends testing before choosing any treatment.
Do I need a UV system for well water?
UV disinfection is a common and effective way to treat bacteria in private well water. Whether you need one depends on your test results. Island Health recommends that private well owners test their water regularly for bacteria and chemical contaminants.
How often does a water softener need maintenance?
A softener needs salt topped up regularly, and the resin tank and brine tank should be checked and cleaned periodically. UV lamps typically need annual replacement, and cartridge filters need changing on the manufacturer's schedule.
Where should my water be tested?
Use an accredited laboratory for well water testing, particularly for bacteria. Island Health provides information on well water testing and where to send samples. Waywest reviews the results with you and recommends treatment based on what the test shows.
