What the job involves
- Check the gas load. A large professional-style range can draw considerably more gas than a standard one. We confirm the existing piping and meter can supply it alongside your furnace, water heater and other appliances.
- Plan the route from the nearest suitable gas line to the kitchen, through a crawlspace, basement or wall where possible.
- Permit the work through Technical Safety BC.
- Run the gas line and install an accessible manual shut-off valve for the appliance.
- Pressure test new piping for leaks.
- Connect the appliance with an approved connector, and install any anti-tip bracket the range requires.
- Test the burners and oven, check flame quality and adjust as needed.
Electric to gas: what to know first
If you are renovating a kitchen and want gas cooking, involve a gas fitter before the cabinets go in. It is much simpler to route a gas line through an open wall or floor than to fish it through finished cabinetry. The appliance's required shut-off location and clearances also affect cabinet layout.

Common questions
Can I install a gas range myself in BC?
No. In British Columbia, connecting a gas appliance is regulated gas work that must be done by a licensed gas fitter, generally under a Technical Safety BC permit. Unpermitted gas connections can create safety, insurance and resale problems.
How much does it cost to switch from an electric to a gas range?
The main variables are the distance from the nearest gas line to the kitchen, whether the route runs through finished walls or an accessible crawlspace, and whether the gas meter and existing piping can handle the added load. Waywest quotes after checking the route and the gas load.
Does a gas range need a special electrical outlet?

Do I need a range hood with a gas cooktop?
