Why licensing and permits matter
Gas work in British Columbia is regulated by Technical Safety BC. Installations must be completed by a licensed gas contractor, under a permit, and meet the gas code for pipe sizing, venting, clearances and shut-offs. Waywest holds TSBC licensing for gas work and obtains the required permit for each job.
A permit protects you in practical ways:
- Safety. Correct pipe sizing and venting prevent incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide.
- Insurance. An insurer may question a gas-related claim involving unpermitted work.

Sizing the gas line correctly
Every gas appliance needs a certain volume of gas at full output. When a home adds a new range, BBQ or tankless water heater, the total load on the gas system goes up. If the existing pipe is too small, appliances can starve for gas when several run at once — flames drop, a tankless unit throws errors, or a furnace short-cycles.
We calculate the total load on your gas system before adding anything to it, and upsize piping where needed.

Common questions
Do I need a licensed gas fitter in BC?
Yes. In British Columbia, gas installations and alterations must be done by a gas contractor licensed by Technical Safety BC, and most gas work requires a permit. Homeowners are not permitted to do their own gas work, with very limited exceptions. Unpermitted gas work can also create problems with insurance and home sales.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave the building right away without using switches, appliances or phones inside. From outside, call FortisBC's 24-hour emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 or 911. Once the site is safe, a licensed gas fitter can locate and repair the leak.
Can you run a gas line for a BBQ or outdoor kitchen?
Yes. Waywest installs natural gas lines to barbecues, outdoor kitchens, fire tables and patio heaters, with a shut-off valve and quick-connect where appropriate. The work is permitted and pressure tested like any other gas installation.
Can I convert my appliance from propane to natural gas?
Many appliances can be converted using a manufacturer-approved conversion kit, installed by a licensed gas fitter. Not every appliance is convertible. Waywest checks the model and manufacturer requirements before quoting.
